An overview
Marietta's existence dates back to 1788 when a group of settlers arrived
from New England aboard a flatboat. Marietta's growth has always been
tied to the river with its central business district laying in the flat
land created by the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers. Marietta
was a thriving town when this photo was taken around 1898.
Interstate 77 passed
just east of the city in the 1970s. Since then, major growth has been
focused on the Pike Street area, with Marietta's largest retailers, a
Lowe's Home Improvement store and a Super Wal-mart, being located less
than a half mile from the highway.
